On textiles

I love the idea of textiles.

I honestly do.

I love quilting - piecing tops, watching the patterns come together, the whole concept of needle through fabric.

Sewing clothes? It can frustrate me, but I understand it and I'm damned good at it. It's genetic. I come from a very long line of Woman that Sew.

Knitting? *rolls eyes* I took classes. Read books. Tried everything known to man and I can't do it. It makes absolutely no sense. Now, I can't feel bad about this. My mother can't knit. My granny didn't knit. I am not in the knitting gene pool. Two needles is simply ridiculous. ;-)

Crochet, now - it makes perfect sense. I'm crocheting a hat today. Those are my favorite to do - there's something amazingly, mathematically right about the adding stitches, reducing. And working in the round? Makes me happy.

I know, I'm a freak. I don't know *why*, it just does. (Of course, this is where I admit I use q-tips to mark stitches, right? And I crochet upside down and backwards, which means my wrong side is the outside and my hats swirl the wrong way. Hey, you can't get deeply cracked hats just anywhere...)

Lorna and I found a huge basket of yarn on sale for a quarter a skein and we bought a bunch - goofy yarn, eyelash yarn, fuzzy and sparkly and ridiculously froofy yarn. So, hats.

*nods*

Hats.

Ohhhh I love silly yarns! So much fun. Trim, mitts, bags, whatever.

I can't crotchet to save my life. I've tried. Oh, how I've tried. One hook is not enough. ;-) I can crotchet an edge on something, but that's about it.

Give me fabric and I'm good. Tell me to make the fabric, I'm all over it. Tell me to grab a sheep and create a blanket, I get all giddy. :D

I crocheted a sweater once. Never Again. It's like higher math or something - it hurts my brain.

And you don't want me doing anything that involves a needle and thread in any capacity. Beth is great with quilting, I can't even sew on a button. I'm better off writing (or knitting - heh) while she quilts.

I'd ask for a hat for M, but I see you have many requests already. ;-)
